The World of Mysore Pak: Reinventing a Timeless Classic in Mysuru

by Ella

Mysore pak, the iconic sweet with a rich history dating back to the 19th century, has undergone a modern reinvention in the very city where it all began. In Mysuru, the birthplace of this beloved dessert, The World of Mysore Pak is offering an innovative twist on the classic treat. Located on Chamundi Hills Road, this experiential store is dedicated to bringing new flavors to the traditional Mysore pak while keeping its essence intact.

Known for its unique texture and flavor, Mysore pak was first created by Kakasura Madappa, the royal cook for King Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV. The simple yet rich combination of gram flour, ghee, and sugar has stood the test of time. However, at this one-of-a-kind store, 11 varieties of Mysore pak are on offer, each adding a new layer of creativity and flavor.

The Story Behind the Store

The store was founded by three friends who are now business partners: Sowmya H S, Shruti Pavan Shroff, and Nikhil Mannar. Sowmya, with her background in IT, says the idea for the store began two years ago, and after numerous trials, they perfected their recipe. Their aim is to create an immersive experience where customers can witness the preparation of Mysore pak, taste different varieties, and provide feedback on their creations.

Sowmya H S: “We wanted to offer a dedicated space for Mysore pak, a product that has long been a cherished souvenir for tourists visiting Mysuru.”

Shruti Pavan Shroff adds that while many sweet shops offer Mysore pak, none focus solely on this iconic dessert. “Our goal is to honor the legacy of Mysore pak while bringing a modern touch to it,” she says.

The store’s location was also carefully selected to attract tourists who are eager to take home local specialties. Mysore pak, as a traditional sweet, has been a popular souvenir for many years, and now visitors can enjoy it in a variety of new and exciting flavors.

Unique Offerings and Health-Conscious Options

In addition to the traditional and flavored Mysore pak, the store also features unique creations like the Paka Sandwich and Mysore Peda. The Paka Sandwich consists of layers of kaju barfi sandwiched between Mysore pak, while the Mysore Peda draws inspiration from the famous Dharwad peda.

For health-conscious customers, Jaggery Millet and Jaggery Mysore Pak provide an alternative sweet made without synthetic flavorings. The team uses only fresh fruit pulp in their preparations, and every sweet is made with pure ghee (except for the original Mysore pak, which is made with oil to achieve its signature texture).

Nikhil also reveals plans for an exciting new offering: a Mysore Pak and ice cream combination that they are eager to roll out.

Blending Tradition with Technology

To ensure the production process is efficient and maintains high standards, the store has incorporated advanced technology. Visitors can watch the Mysore pak-making process through a glass partition, where they can see how the sweets are created. The kitchen is equipped with customized machines, sourced from cities such as Delhi, Coimbatore, and Bengaluru. One standout piece of technology is the Mysore Pak cutting machine, which slices the sweet into perfect portions. This machine took six months of research and development to perfect.

In addition, the store showcases a video that narrates the history of Mysore pak, offering a unique and engaging way for tourists to learn about the sweet’s cultural significance.

The Perfect Souvenir from Mysuru

The World of Mysore Pak is not just a place to buy sweets—it’s an immersive journey into the heritage of Mysore pak. It’s a place where history meets modernity, where visitors can explore the nuances of a centuries-old dessert in a contemporary setting.
