56% of India’s Disease Burden Due to Unhealthy Diet: ICMR Report

by Ella

New Delhi, India – An alarming 56.4 percent of India’s total disease burden is attributed to unhealthy diets, according to a report released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday. To address this issue, the ICMR has introduced 17 dietary guidelines aimed at fulfilling essential nutrient requirements and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity and diabetes.

The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), part of the ICMR, emphasized that healthy diets and physical activity can significantly reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension (HTN), and can prevent up to 80 percent of type 2 diabetes cases.

“A significant proportion of premature deaths can be averted by following a healthy lifestyle,” the report stated. It highlighted the increasing consumption of highly processed foods rich in sugars and fats, combined with decreased physical activity and limited access to a variety of foods, as key factors exacerbating micronutrient deficiencies and overweight issues.

Additionally, the NIN advised adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent obesity and recommended that individuals read food labels to make informed and healthy food choices.

“Through the Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs), we emphasize that the most logical, sustainable, and long-term solution to all forms of malnutrition is ensuring the availability, accessibility, and affordability of nutrient-rich foods while promoting the consumption of diverse foods,” said Dr. R. Hemlatha, Director of the NIN. “The guidelines are based on scientific evidence and are designed to help achieve the goals stated in the National Nutrition Policy.”

The report also noted significant changes in the dietary habits of Indians, stressing the need for continued education and awareness to encourage healthier eating patterns and lifestyle choices.
