US Government Purchases $22 Million of West Coast Seafood for Food Assistance Programs

by Ella

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allocated $22 million (€20 million) to support West Coast seafood processors. This funding aims to procure Pacific rockfish fillets and Pacific hake fillets, as confirmed by the West Coast Seafood Processors Association (WCSPA), Midwater Trawlers Cooperative (MTC), and Fishermen’s Marketing Association (FMA) in a letter addressed to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) in April 2024.

The initiative falls under Section 32 of the USDA’s operations, known as “bonus buys,” which are utilized to bolster domestic food assistance programs.
