Adopting a keto diet, characterized by high fat intake and minimal carbohydrates, has been shown to effectively promote weight loss. However, recent findings suggest potential drawbacks, such as increased cholesterol levels and potential impacts on gut health.
Also referred to as the ketogenic diet, this dietary approach shifts the body’s energy source from carbohydrates to ketone bodies derived from stored fat, facilitating weight reduction.
Research comparing individuals on a ketogenic diet to those on traditional diets has highlighted both advantages and disadvantages. A new randomized controlled trial conducted by Javier Gonzalez and colleagues at the University of Bath enrolled 53 participants, averaging 34 years old and non-obese. Participants were randomly assigned to follow a ketogenic regimen, where carbohydrates constituted less than 8 percent of their energy intake, with fat making up over 70 percent.
