Mediterranean Diet Linked to Reduced Stress Levels, Study Finds

New research from Binghamton University suggests that adopting the Mediterranean diet may significantly reduce stress levels compared to the traditional Western diet. The study indicates that individuals who follow a Mediterranean diet—characterized by plant-based foods, healthy fats, and minimal processed items—report lower perceived stress and mental distress.

The research, led by Lina Begdache, Associate Professor of Health and Wellness Studies, involved a survey of over 1,500 participants. Utilizing machine learning to analyze dietary habits and stress levels, the study found a clear association between the Mediterranean diet and reduced stress perception. Conversely, a Western diet, known for its high glycemic and processed foods, was linked to higher stress and mental distress.

“Stress is known to precede mental distress, and our findings contribute to understanding how the Mediterranean diet may alleviate this stress,” said Begdache. The diet’s emphasis on wholesome, colorful foods contrasts sharply with the Western diet’s focus on low-quality, processed options.
