Excessive Chicken Consumption May Lead to Hidden Fat and Sugar Intake, Study Finds

by Ella

Chicken breast is a popular choice for daily protein among many individuals, particularly those focusing on a health-conscious diet. However, a new study suggests that consuming chicken in large amounts may not be as beneficial as previously thought, potentially contributing to hidden fat and sugar intake.

The research highlights that excessive consumption of chicken breast, often paired with ketchup, can inadvertently increase the amount of fat and sugar in one’s diet. While chicken breast is typically considered a low-saturated-fat food, the study reveals that even lower-saturated-fat options can gradually add unhealthy fats to one’s diet.

Professor Christopher Taylor, director of medical dietetics at The Ohio State University and lead author of the study, emphasizes that while chicken breast is generally seen as a healthier choice, it is crucial to understand how even such foods can impact overall fat and sugar consumption.

The study, which surveyed 35,000 U.S. adults, aimed to shed light on common yet overlooked sources of dietary fat and sugar. The findings indicate that cheese, pizza, ice cream, and eggs are significant contributors of saturated fat. Additionally, cold cuts, cream substitutes, fried potatoes, and whole milk are also high in saturated fats.

In terms of added sugars, the study points to soft drinks, tea, fruit juices, cakes, and pies as primary sources. Tomato-based condiments, cereal bars, energy drinks, and yeast breads also contribute to the intake of added sugars.

Overall, the research underscores the importance of being mindful of not just the obvious sources of unhealthy fats and sugars, but also those less apparent, such as everyday items like chicken breast and ketchup.
