Vietnam Reaps $4.63 Billion from Fruit Exports, Transforming Farmers into VND Billionaires

by Ella

Vietnam’s fruit export sector has achieved remarkable success this year, generating $4.63 billion in revenue. In Son Trung, Khanh Hoa, Nguyen Ngoc Thao is enjoying a lucrative durian season, with his 14-hectare orchard expected to yield over 200 tons. With market prices soaring to 82,000 VND per kilogram, Thao anticipates a revenue of approximately 16 billion VND, leading to a profit of around 13.5 billion VND, marking his most successful year to date.

Similarly, Mai Van Khang in Son Lam, Khanh Son, is celebrating a bountiful durian harvest from his 10-hectare orchard, projecting a profit of 8 billion VND. Further north in Son La, Bui Van Quang faces challenges due to heatwaves, reducing his longan yield but benefiting from high market prices, which have resulted in an estimated revenue of 2.4-2.8 billion VND.

In Bac Giang, despite a reduced lychee production of 86,000 tons—42.5% less than last year—farmers are achieving high market prices of 55,000-110,000 VND per kilogram, leading to record-breaking revenues of 4,814 trillion VND, an increase of 156 billion VND from 2023.

Nguyen Dinh Tung, CEO of Vina T&T Group, reported a 26% increase in U.S. exports and strong demand in China, with 10-15 containers of fresh durian shipped monthly. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) announced that Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached 750 million USD in August, a 61.6% increase from last year, making it the second-highest month for export revenue in 2024.

In the first eight months of 2024, total export revenues amounted to 4.63 billion USD, a 30.6% increase from the previous year. MARD aims for a year-end target of 7 billion USD, buoyed by high-value crops like durian and expanding export markets.

Recent developments include Vietnamese pomelos gaining access to South Korea and new protocols for exporting frozen durian and fresh coconut to China. MARD expects fresh coconut exports to increase by 200-300 million USD in 2024, while frozen durian exports could reach 400-500 million USD.

Looking ahead, MARD is negotiating access for additional Vietnamese fruits to China and the U.S., including pomelo, avocado, and passion fruit. These efforts are part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to achieve a 10 billion USD export milestone by enhancing export value and processing techniques.
