Peru Overtakes Chile as Leading Table Grape Exporter; China Climbs to Third

by Ella

The global table grape export market has seen significant shifts recently, with Peru emerging as the leading exporter, surpassing Chile in 2023. This change underscores a broader trend of dynamic competition within the top grape-exporting countries.

Despite overall stagnation in the global grape trade—potentially influenced by deglobalization, climate change, and advancements in grape cultivation—there are notable changes in export rankings. Peru’s rise to the top position is attributed to its extended growing season and lower labor costs. Peruvian grape exports have increased by an average of 14.3% annually, translating to an additional 66,000 tons, while Chile’s exports have decreased by 6.6% per year, or 40,000 tons.

“The global table grape market is undergoing a significant transformation,” said Andriy Yarmak, an economist at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). “Countries are transitioning to new grape varieties that cater to evolving consumer preferences and are more resistant to pests, diseases, and climate stress. This shift is crucial as the market faces increased competition from other fruits like blueberries. Peru, notably, is also a leader in blueberry exports.”

In a remarkable development, China has climbed to the third-largest exporter of fresh table grapes, overtaking Italy and South Africa. China’s exports have grown by 7.4% annually, adding 28,000 tons to its export volume. In contrast, Italy’s grape exports have decreased by 10,000 tons per year.

India has shown impressive growth, with grape exports increasing by 10.2% annually. This growth has propelled India to eighth place in global rankings, displacing the United States, which has seen a 10% reduction in its grape exports.

Turkey, currently ranked tenth, experienced a sharp decline in exports in 2023 and faces stagnation. The country needs to innovate by replacing outdated grape varieties and enhancing product quality to regain its competitive edge.

Within the top 20 exporters, Mexico is struggling with an annual export drop of 21%, partly due to competition from Peru. Conversely, Brazil’s grape exports are growing by 10.6% annually, and Moldova’s exports have increased by 6%, lifting Moldova to 18th place globally. However, Uzbekistan, which was in the top 10 in 2022, fell to 20th place in 2023 due to a devastating “grape catastrophe” involving widespread vineyard losses from frost.

As the global grape market continues to evolve, these trends highlight the competitive nature of the industry and the need for adaptation and innovation among key exporters.
