As the Sanford International prepares to open to the public this Thursday, golfers are already immersing themselves in the local culture of Sioux Falls. The city’s vibrant dining scene has welcomed some of the tournament’s top stars, including Angel Cabrera and Ricardo Gonzalez.
A Memorable Dining Experience
Unexpected Encounter at Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant
Gabriel Rivero, the owner of Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant, had a surprise visit from golf professionals Angel Cabrera and Ricardo Gonzalez on Monday. Rivero initially mistook the group for a reservation made by one of their caddies, whom he recognized despite a year having passed since their last meeting.
“When the caddie introduced Cabrera, I was initially confused. But then I realized it was Angel ‘El Pato’ Cabrera,” Rivero said. Cabrera, known for his distinctive walk and impressive PGA Tour record—including wins at the 2007 U.S. Open, 2009 Masters, and 2014 Greenbrier Classic—was a delight to meet.
Catering to the Pros
Rivero, keen to provide a memorable experience, ensured the golfers felt at home. The restaurant’s menu was tailored to the Argentine tastes of Cabrera and Gonzalez. “I told them, ‘El Pato Cabrera, this is your home—anything you need, just let us know,’” Rivero added.
Golfers Exploring Sioux Falls
Familiarizing with the Community
According to Davis Trosin, Sanford International Tournament Director, many golfers arrive early in the week to explore Sioux Falls. With the busy travel schedules of professional golfers, this downtime is an opportunity for them to enjoy local attractions and dining spots.
Trosin and his team at Pro Link Sports provide recommendations to help golfers make the most of their visit. Popular spots include Morrie’s Steakhouse, which one golfer reportedly frequents regularly, and Josiah’s Coffeehouse, praised by visitors for its charm.
Local Favorites and Hospitality
Building Connections
Sioux Falls’ hospitality extends beyond just recommendations. Trosin emphasizes the city’s warm welcome, which includes acknowledging the golfers’ presence without overwhelming them. “Golfers appreciate the recognition, and they enjoy the local interactions,” Trosin said.
Local establishments like R-Wine Bar, which has seen visits from pros like David Frost, and other hidden gems contribute to the positive experience golfers have during their stay.
