New Venue in a Historic Setting
Los Gatos, CA — A historic Queen Anne Victorian mansion in Los Gatos has been transformed into Gardenia, a French Asian fusion restaurant with an innovative coffee program. The mansion, which has served various purposes since its days as a funeral parlor (closed in 1971), has been repurposed by Gardenia owner Carol Wang.
Inspiration Behind Gardenia
Wang, who previously worked in the medical field, was inspired by the mansion’s historic charm to establish both a restaurant and a coffee shop. “With this beautiful Victorian-style historical beauty, no one could resist,” Wang said. “I didn’t want to waste this beautiful place… I definitely needed to start a restaurant.”
A Glimpse into History
Built in 1891 for Mary Barry Coggeshall and her children, the mansion holds a rich history. Barry Coggeshall, born in Chile to Irish immigrants, moved to San Francisco during the gold rush and later settled in Los Gatos. She built the home after an unconventional separation from her husband.
Culinary and Coffee Expertise
Despite having no prior experience in the food and beverage industry, Wang brought on David Intonato, an experienced executive chef, to develop the restaurant’s culinary program. Gardenia offers a blend of French and Asian cuisines, inspired by Wang’s love for both cultures.
Menu Highlights
Gardenia features a diverse menu that includes:
Brunch Starters: Lobster deviled eggs with wasabi flying fish roe, grilled tako (octopus) “escargot” with bone marrow.
Brunch Entrees: Pan bagnat (French sandwich) with togarashi-seared ahi, smoked wagyu brisket French dip.
Happy Hour Offerings: Takoyaki (battered octopus balls), duck confit spring rolls.
The drink menu includes an array of wine cocktails, mocktails, beers, and a comprehensive coffee program.
Coffee Program and Influences
Wang’s passion for coffee began long before she started drinking it. “I loved the aroma and ambiance of coffee shops,” she said. After trying coffee five years ago, she became hooked. Gardenia’s coffee program is developed with help from Morgan Eckroth, a renowned barista, and Weihong Zhang, a U.S. Brewers Cup champion.
Eckroth, known for her intricate coffee recipes and social media presence, is working with Gardenia to showcase a wide range of coffee flavors. “Gardenia is located in such a historic location that already acts as a community hub,” Eckroth said.
Community and Future Plans
Wang, a long-time Bay Area resident, aims to make Gardenia a central part of the Los Gatos community. “We want to be part of the community and bring more people to town,” Wang said.
Gardenia features two gardenia topiaries and reflects its historical setting with a blend of modern and traditional elements. Wang hopes to foster community connections through this unique venue.
