“San Angel was meant to bring a different experience to Athens, based on authentic Mexican food, but with better quality and a more modern environment than what you typically would see in Athens,” Bueno said.

While the menu includes classic Tex-Mex favorites like fajitas, tacos, and enchiladas, the restaurant stands out due to its unique seasonings and flavors. San Angel also offers a creative twist by serving dishes like octopus and various specialty bowls, adding a level of innovation not often seen in the area.

Design Inspired by Modern Ambiance

The restaurant’s design is inspired by ideas from the owners, who opened a similar location in Wire Park, Watkinsville in 2023. Their aim was to replicate that successful ambiance in Athens, providing customers with a warm and welcoming environment.

“Our customers have been wonderful,” Bueno said. “The majority are excited when they walk in and usually leave happy, eager to return. We’ve heard many say, ‘This is my new favorite spot,’ which warms our hearts, as making our customers happy is our top goal.”

Ryan Buckley, a server at San Angel, shared his experience of working at the new restaurant. He was initially drawn to the vibrant murals and friendly team, and now finds inspiration in the lively atmosphere, which drives him to offer attentive and welcoming service.

Reflecting on his training, Buckley emphasized the guidance he received from Eduardo Lopez, the restaurant’s part-owner and manager. “Eduardo taught me the importance of attention to detail in customer service, which I believe is key to making dining experiences unforgettable,” Buckley said.

A Diverse Menu for Every Taste

What sets San Angel apart, according to Buckley, is the wide variety of dishes on offer. From the light “Spring Mix Salad” to the hearty “Cantina Super Bowl” and the non-Mexican “Classic City Burger,” there’s something for everyone. Buckley’s personal favorite, the “Bulldog Burrito,” combines chicken, shrimp, and steak in one delicious dish, priced at just $15.

To enhance the customer experience, San Angel has introduced a “Join the Club” program, which offers a 15% discount on the day customers sign up.
