Exciting Celebrations Ahead
With just 100 days left until Glasgow kicks off its yearlong birthday celebration, details of the Glasgow 850 programme have been unveiled. The events planned for 2025 aim to engage the entire community and highlight the city’s rich culture and cuisine.
Key Activities and Events
Central to the Glasgow 850 programme are several signature activities. These include a three-day music festival, a pop-up exhibition at the People’s Palace, and the Taste the Place food trail. These events will provide opportunities for residents and visitors to participate in the celebrations throughout the year.
Beginning the festivities will be activities related to St. Mungo and the Celtic Connections festival. Additionally, the Lord Provost of Glasgow will host a civic programme that celebrates the city’s famous personalities and community leaders. Collaborations with local businesses will further enrich the experience for both citizens and visitors.
Supporting Local Events
The newly established Glasgow 850 Festival Fund will also support existing city events, enhancing their programmes and extending their reach. This fund aims to showcase Glasgow’s incredible talent while fostering community involvement in the celebrations.
So far, 10 organizations have received grants of up to £10,000 from the fund. Notable events benefiting from this include the Glasgow Comedy Festival, Glasgow Film Festival, and Piping Live! Among others, summer favorites like Mela, Merchant City Festival, and TRNSMT will feature a special Glasgow 850 stage highlighting local performers.
Musical Celebrations
In honor of Glasgow’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music in 2008, the Clyde Chorus will feature performances at various venues along the River Clyde, including the SEC Armadillo. This three-day music celebration at the end of May will showcase a wide range of genres, from classical to contemporary. Some events will be free, while others will require tickets.
Despite the ongoing refurbishment of the People’s Palace, visitors can still enjoy a pop-up exhibition that highlights the social history of Glasgow. This exhibition will showcase how Glaswegians lived and worked in the past.
Culinary Experiences
In April, the Taste the Place initiative, in partnership with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, will invite locals and tourists to explore the history of Glasgow’s hospitality scene. This self-guided digital trail will share stories from more than 40 local eateries, celebrating authentic dishes that reflect Glasgow’s diverse culinary heritage.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
Cllr Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, expressed enthusiasm for the Glasgow 850 celebrations. She stated, “This curated programme will allow us to come together and celebrate our history, culture, and community spirit. It provides a reason to explore what makes Glasgow unique and envision our future.”
Finlay MacDonald, Artistic Director of Piping Live!, highlighted Glasgow’s vital role in shaping piping traditions and expressed excitement about being part of the yearlong programme. He emphasized the importance of connecting citizens to the city’s piping heritage.
Eddie Kim, owner of Gomo Kimchi and the Kimchi Deli, shared his anticipation for sharing his food and story during the celebrations. He noted his connection to Glasgow through love and cultural heritage.
To complement the yearlong programme, a volunteer and employability initiative will launch in October. More activities for young people and communities will be announced in January.
A Yearlong Celebration
Throughout 2025, Glasgow will celebrate its 850th birthday with a comprehensive programme that reflects on its past, present, and future. The events aim to involve everyone connected to the city, both locally and globally. This milestone celebration will honor generations who have shaped Glasgow, foster a sense of belonging, and inspire ambitious changes for the future. It will also help raise Glasgow’s profile on the international stage and encourage visitors to explore the city’s unique offerings.
