Curated Cuisine: New Peninsula Food Halls Open September 30

by Ella

Two exciting food halls are set to debut on September 30 in the Peninsula. The Hangar, located in South San Francisco, features diverse cuisines in a modern, aviation-themed setting. Meanwhile, Kurated Kitchens in Sunnyvale offers a range of Asian dining options, including favorites from former local restaurants, all within a vibrant café adorned with pastel colors and floral murals. These additions join a growing number of food halls in the Bay Area, including State Street Market, CloudKitchens, and Local Kitchens.

The Hangar: A Tribute to South San Francisco

The Hangar showcases six unique dining concepts and is a collaboration between Bon Appetit Management Company and Healthpeak, a real estate investment trust. This marks their third culinary project honoring the area’s innovative spirit, alongside Foundry & Lux and Chandlery at the Shore.

Carrie Pearl, district manager at Bon Appetit, emphasizes that The Hangar is “a love letter to the city.” A striking staircase at the entrance features wooden seating and wall sockets, perfect for working or socializing. The first dining option, Peak Provisions, offers coffee, breakfast, and grab-and-go items like sandwiches and salads.

Sustainable Coffee and Local Delights

Peak Provisions serves coffee from Progeny Coffee, a sustainable company based in Berkeley. Founded by fifth-generation Colombian coffee farmer Maria Palacio, Progeny aims to support farmers by cutting out middlemen. Pearl praises Progeny for its commitment to social responsibility and quality.

Alongside coffee, Peak Provisions offers tea from Five Mountains Tea, bagels from Boichik, and pastries from Panorama Baking Company. Breakfast and lunch options range from $5 to $16, including avocado toast, grain bowls, and a pluot salad.

Market Hall: A Culinary Journey

Behind the grand staircase, the Market Hall features various eateries: The Board (sandwiches and salads), The Layover (bibimbap and Korean noodles), La Ventana (Mexican cuisine), and The Stack (American diner classics). Pearl shares that these concepts reflect her personal food preferences.

The Board serves sandwiches priced between $12 and $17, along with build-your-own options. The Layover allows customers to customize their bibimbap and offers traditional noodle dishes. Pearl highlights jjajangmyeon, a black bean sauce noodle dish, as a unique offering.

La Ventana focuses on authentic Mexican cuisine, sourcing tortillas and bread from local vendors. Diners can build their own dishes or choose a la carte items, with Pearl’s favorite being the torta cubana.

The Stack offers indulgent favorites like steak and eggs, French toast, and burgers, with menu items priced between $10 and $16.

Upcoming Openings and Artistic Touches

While The Hangar officially opens on September 30, several concepts are already welcoming guests. The Stack opens on September 27, and the full-service bar and French Californian restaurant, Camber, will launch next month.

Pearl, who previously worked as a chef for Bon Appetit, aims to offer lighter interpretations of classic French dishes using California ingredients. Designed by Flad Architects, the space also features artwork by local artists, enhancing the community vibe.

Pearl envisions The Hangar as a hub for local artists and musicians, hoping to create a venue for art expos and live performances.
