Goa Celebrates Its Culinary Heritage
On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, along with author Flavel Monteiro, launched SAVOR GOA: The Best Restaurants, a culinary coffee table book that highlights Goa’s rich culinary culture. The event, held at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) in Goa, saw key figures in tourism and hospitality in attendance, including Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism, and Shri Jack Sukhija, President of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG).
Showcasing Goan Cuisine
The Best Restaurants is a 190-page book that explores the culinary diversity of Goa. It features 46 of the state’s top restaurants and presents over 16 authentic Goan recipes. The book, available in both print and eBook formats, aims to showcase the evolution of Goan cuisine, blending traditional and modern elements. The eBook version also includes videos, enhancing the reader’s experience by offering a more interactive glimpse into Goan culinary art.
Minister Khaunte’s Vision for Goan Cuisine
During his keynote speech, Hon’ble Minister Khaunte expressed his pride in Goa’s growing reputation as a culinary hub. “Goa is fast becoming the food capital of India, with every village having its own unique take on our traditional dishes. Our efforts focus on Regenerative Tourism, and through collaboration, we will shape the future of Goan cuisine,” he said. He noted that the SAVOR GOA book is an homage to the state’s rich culinary legacy while pointing towards its future.
Culinary Diversity as a Tourism Asset
Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism, spoke of the significance of the book in promoting Goan cuisine globally. “This initiative strengthens our efforts to position Goa as a leading culinary destination. It is heartening to see both heritage and innovation beautifully captured in this book,” he remarked.
Author Flavel Monteiro described the book as a deep dive into Goa’s culinary essence, combining the finest dining experiences with beloved family recipes. “Goa’s cuisine is more than just food—it tells a story of centuries of history and a shared passion for flavor,” Monteiro added, emphasizing that food is a vital part of the Goan way of life.
Merchandise and World Tourism Week
As part of World Tourism Week celebrations, the event also saw the unveiling of special t-shirts and caps designed for the upcoming Yuva Tourism Clubs meet on 26th September 2024 at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan. The merchandise aims to connect participants with Goa’s cultural heritage, promoting responsible travel and fostering a sense of unity.
Promoting Goa’s Culinary Appeal
TTAG President Shri Jack Sukhija underscored the importance of Goa’s cuisine in drawing international attention. “Books like SAVOR GOA not only promote our culinary traditions but also elevate Goa’s food culture on the global stage,” he said. The state’s rich and diverse food offerings are an integral part of its appeal as a tourism destination.
Culinary Competition
The event concluded with a cooking competition, where participants, including students, homemakers, and aspiring chefs, showcased their creativity with innovative dishes. Shri Khaunte and Shri Anchipaka visited the competition area to appreciate the participants’ efforts. The winners received prizes for their culinary skills, celebrating their contributions to Goa’s evolving food scene.
Strengthening Goa’s Position as a Culinary Destination
The launch of SAVOR GOA: The Best Restaurants is part of a broader initiative by Goa Tourism to highlight the state’s culture and cuisine as key components of its tourism offering. With a focus on sustainability, heritage, and innovation, Goa continues to establish itself as a premier culinary destination both within India and globally.
