Originally founded by Norman Frater in 2004 in Jerusalem, New York, the restaurant quickly grew into a family-run success. Today, with seven locations spread across Long Island and Queens, the Hempstead branch holds special significance for the Frater family.

“This community means so much to us, and we aim to give back in every way we can,” said Sophia Forbes, who left her nursing career to join her husband, Norman, in managing the family business full-time. “It’s been a challenging journey, but it has absolutely been worth it.”
Beyond Hempstead, Tropical Jerk has established itself in Jamaica, Baldwin, Roosevelt, Uniondale, and Liberty Avenue. Each location reflects the Frater family’s dedication to offering fresh, homemade Jamaican dishes, giving patrons across different neighborhoods the chance to enjoy the rich and authentic flavors of the Caribbean.
Overcoming Challenges While Staying True to Roots
Despite hurdles like inflation and shifts in consumer preferences, Tropical Jerk has thrived by staying loyal to its traditional recipes. The restaurant’s signature jerk seasoning, crafted from fresh ingredients like spices, onions, scallions, and peppers, remains a customer favorite. “When customers tell us that our food reminds them of their mother’s cooking, that’s when we know we’re doing something right,” Forbes remarked.
Even with growing competition in the Jamaican food scene, Forbes remains confident. “Every day, a new Jamaican restaurant opens,” she noted. However, Tropical Jerk’s focus on high-quality food and community involvement has helped maintain its edge, with notable corporate clients such as JetBlue and North Shore contributing to its continued success.
Giving Back to the Community
The Frater family believes in giving back to the community that has supported them for so many years. They are actively involved in local charitable initiatives and contribute to scholarships aimed at students pursuing culinary arts, particularly those from Hempstead and Long Island. “Nothing is truly valuable unless you’re giving back to those who have supported you,” Forbes emphasized.
A Family Business and Future Franchise Goals
As Tropical Jerk looks ahead to opening its eighth location in Westbury, the Frater family remains committed to keeping the business a family affair. Their five children are actively involved in various management and culinary roles, preparing to carry the business forward. “We want them to continue our legacy and take it even further,” Forbes said proudly.
The family’s ultimate vision for Tropical Jerk is to expand the brand into a franchise, bringing the flavors of Jamaica to a broader audience. “Our goal is to make every customer feel like they’re home when they visit Tropical Jerk,” Forbes concluded.
With their eighth location on the horizon, the Frater family is eager to keep sharing their love of food, tradition, and community as they grow.
