Bamboo Garden: A Taste of Authentic Asian Cuisine in Staunton

by Ella

Discovering a Local Favorite

If you’re in Staunton, there’s a great place to dine—Bamboo Garden Asian Cuisine. This family-owned restaurant, located at 121 S. Edwardsville St., offers a delightful array of authentic Asian dishes. Although the sushi section was closed during my visit, the restaurant’s calming Zen decor and soothing instrumental music created a peaceful dining atmosphere.

A Relaxing Dining Experience

The decor features ocean-inspired blue chair covers and koi fish painted on the back wall, enhancing the tranquil vibe. During my visit on a Tuesday afternoon, the restaurant was not crowded, but I noticed several customers picking up their carry-out orders.

Delicious Dinner Specials

While I enjoy Bamboo Garden’s Hawaiian fried rice with chunks of pineapple, I decided to try one of their complete dinner specials for dinner. The restaurant offers three options: the Bamboo Dinner for $16.99, the Jade Dinner for $17.99, and the Imperial Dinner for $18.99. Each meal includes a selection of soup, appetizers, and your choice of rice.

Dinner Options

You can choose from wonton, egg drop, or hot and sour soup. For appetizers, options include two crab rangoons with either an egg roll, chicken wing, or fried wonton. You can also select between fried rice or steamed rice.

For the Bamboo Dinner, entrees include chop suey, sweet and sour pork, garlic chicken, kung pao chicken, chicken with broccoli, or Hunan chicken. I opted for the Imperial Dinner, which features dishes like General Tso’s chicken, orange chicken, shrimp with broccoli, and shrimp with lobster sauce. I chose the shrimp with lobster sauce for a lighter option, even though the dish contains no actual lobster.

The Dish Explained

According to TheKitchn.com, Chinese lobster sauce is a savory, glossy sauce made with ribbons of egg and thickened with cornstarch. It traditionally accompanies stir-fried lobster, making shrimp with lobster sauce a popular Cantonese takeout choice.

For those considering the Jade Dinner, it includes choices like pepper steak, sweet and sour chicken, Hunan beef, sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, beef with broccoli, hot braised chicken, or curry chicken.

Lunch Specials and Full Menu

Bamboo Garden also offers lunch specials for $10.59, which include a main dish, an egg roll or two crab rangoons, and a choice of fried or steamed rice. Soup is available for an additional $1. The full menu features traditional Chinese dishes and house specialties.
