Kaaraikudi Indian Multi-Cuisine: A Fresh Take on Tradition in Westmont

by Ella

Westmont’s cherished Indian restaurant, formerly known as Shri Bistro, has rebranded itself as Kaaraikudi Indian Multi-Cuisine, marking a new chapter in its 40-year history. Now under the ownership of Vijay Muralidaran, the restaurant blends North Indian classics with the bold flavors of South India, reflecting Muralidaran’s own Chettinad heritage.

Bringing Authentic Flavors to Westmont

Muralidaran’s vision for Kaaraikudi is clear: to offer authentic Indian cuisine to both the local Indian community and non-Asians alike. “We don’t have a lot of good Indian restaurants here. This was my dream come true… I want to bring those flavors to everyone,” he shared.

The restaurant is the first U.S. location of Kaaraikudi, a renowned chain in India, and brings a unique twist on traditional Chettinad food. Muralidaran believes this new offering will attract food lovers from across the country, especially when they visit Chicago.

“The presence of this restaurant is going to send waves through the Asian-Indian community. When they come to Chicago, they’ll know about this place and the incredible dishes we offer, like our signature biryanis and distinctive flavors,” he said.

The focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods ensures an immersive dining experience. Each dish is a perfect balance of spices and flavors, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

A Commitment to Authenticity

One of the restaurant’s greatest strengths is its dedication to authentic Indian cooking. Their chef has mastered traditional techniques, ensuring every dish reflects the true essence of Indian cuisine. This commitment to authenticity, combined with a modern twist, makes the menu both comforting and exciting.

Muralidaran, who left a career in the corporate world to pursue his dream, has brought his expertise in food quality and safety to every dish. His passion for sharing his culture is evident in the care and attention that goes into each meal.

Highlights from Our Dining Experience

During our visit, we sampled some of the restaurant’s standout dishes. The Chicken 65, a fried chicken dish seasoned with Indian spices and curry leaves, was a perfect introduction to Indian flavors. The chicken was crisp without being greasy, offering a light and flavorful bite.

The pomfret fish, grilled with a ginger-garlic paste and a mix of spices, was another highlight. Rich in flavor yet delicate in texture, it showcased the chef’s skill in preparing seafood.

We also enjoyed the Nalli curry and goat paya curry, both enhanced by coconut in the recipe, giving them a rich, creamy texture. The star of the meal, however, was the chicken biryani, served with fragrant basmati rice, a boiled egg, and a blend of spices that was both comforting and satisfying.

Everything paired wonderfully with their homemade mint and tamarind chutneys, as well as their freshly baked naan. We were advised to start with a mild spice level, which we appreciated, as it allowed us to adjust the heat to our liking without overwhelming the flavors.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

Beyond the incredible food, Kaaraikudi Indian Multi-Cuisine offers a warm and inviting dining atmosphere. The restaurant’s interior has been thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and enjoyment, making it the perfect spot for both casual meals and special occasions.

Be sure to check out their weekend buffet, which is a must-try, offering a variety of dishes at a great value. On Wednesdays, the Dosa Fest allows diners to enjoy all-you-can-eat dosas for under $20. Dosas, thin and crispy crepes originating from South India, have universal appeal and are a highlight of the weekly event.

Private Dining and Future Plans

For those seeking a more intimate dining experience, Kaaraikudi offers a private room that accommodates up to 20 guests, perfect for special celebrations or private events.

Currently, the restaurant serves beer and wine, but Muralidaran plans to expand the offerings to include a full bar in the near future.

A Must-Visit for Indian Cuisine Lovers

Whether you’re a seasoned lover of Indian cuisine or new to its flavors, Kaaraikudi Indian Multi-Cuisine is a must-visit destination. With its dedication to authenticity, high-quality ingredients, and exceptional service, it’s poised to become a favorite among both Westmont residents and visitors.
