Chop Chop Food Pod, a vibrant new business in East Multnomah County, is creating a unique space to celebrate local cuisine and culture. Opening last fall, the food pod features a diverse mix of food cart offerings and is quickly becoming a popular spot for foodies in the Centennial/Powell neighborhoods.
Located at 17150 S.E. Powell Boulevard, Chop Chop is designed to showcase the culinary talents of local vendors, many of whom are first-time food cart operators living within walking distance of the pod. With its family-friendly atmosphere and community-driven focus, Chop Chop is more than just a place to eat—it’s a gathering spot for neighbors.
A Vision Five Years in the Making
The idea for Chop Chop Food Pod was first conceived five years ago following the closure of several popular food pods in Downtown Portland. The ownership team, led by Tina Huynh, wanted to create a space where small business owners could thrive. However, the journey was not without obstacles, including delays caused by the pandemic and permitting issues. Despite these challenges, the food pod has flourished in its early months.
“Our reviews have all been 5-stars, the food speaks for itself,” said Huynh. “People have been excited to have this place with more options for dining.”
A Unique Space for Food and Community
Chop Chop Food Pod is open daily, offering food from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. While the pod itself maintains set hours, individual food carts have the flexibility to operate according to their own schedules. The pod offers ample parking and a secure, enclosed space that makes it easy for parents to relax without worrying about children wandering off.
“We want every food cart owner to be their own CEO, and we try to help them do well,” Huynh explained. “We promote a non-compete environment to ensure fairness and variety, so every cart can succeed.”
The Growing Collection of Food Carts
Currently, there are eight food carts at Chop Chop, with a ninth, Chinese Sizzling Wok, set to open soon. The pod has space for up to 20 carts, and the team is in the process of bringing more vendors on board. Here’s a look at the carts currently serving up delicious dishes:
Ah Huevo Que Si: Mexican cuisine with a robust brunch menu
Sous: Surf and turf, featuring the best pepper salted squid in Portland
YY Korean Kitchen: Authentic Korean food
Kelly Thai and Lao Cuisine: Stir fries, curries, soups, and traditional dishes like Nam Khoo
Shawarma Grill: Grilled meats wrapped in tasty wraps
King of Philly: Classic cheesesteaks, including the iconic Philly-style version
Ginzake Sushi: Fresh sushi and poke bowls
Wen’s Kitchen: Southeast Asian flavors like garlic noodles, crispy chicken wings, and red curry bamboo
“Food translates so well across cultures,” Huynh shared. “We are learning things as we go.”
Exciting Plans for the Future
Looking ahead, the Chop Chop team has big plans for expansion. As the weather warms up, they intend to extend hours and add heaters to the covered seating area. They also plan to host events such as live music, movie nights, pop-up markets, and parties, with the option for guests to rent the space for private gatherings.
“We’re just starting out, so there will be a few mishaps here or there, but we’re always open to feedback,” Huynh said. “We want this to be a community space.”
Chop Chop Food Pod is a promising new addition to East Multnomah County, offering a diverse and growing array of food options in a welcoming environment for the entire community.
