A new French-inspired restaurant, Lumière, is set to open in Charbonneau in late February. Owned by Bill Berry and his son Dominic, the restaurant aims to offer a sophisticated yet approachable dining experience. Located at the former Curry’s Landing site, Lumière will feature a blend of classic French dishes with a modern twist.
A Sophisticated Yet Welcoming Experience
The Berry duo, hailing from Portland, have designed Lumière with attention to every detail, from the decor to the menu. Dominic, a graduate of the Oregon Culinary Institute, crafted a menu that combines timeless French cuisine with fresh, contemporary flavors. Expect to find dishes like steak frites, king salmon, and crème brûlée, alongside more casual offerings like French-inspired pasta and a burger.
On weekends, Lumière will also serve brunch, featuring croque madame, French toast, and sandwiches. The restaurant will have a full bar to complement the meal experience, making it a great spot for a variety of occasions.
A Focus on Flavor and Presentation
Dominic’s goal is for Lumière to be an experience, not just a meal. He wants guests to feel the experience from the moment they enter, with an emphasis on flavor and presentation. The restaurant will elevate classic French dishes while keeping them approachable, with modern touches like rearranged plate presentations and “soup flights” to sample multiple soups.
“French cuisine inspires so many other cuisines,” Dominic explained. “I wanted to create a menu that’s diverse, yet recognizable, and goes beyond the typical perception of French food.”
A Community-Focused Destination
For Bill and Dominic, Lumière is not just about food—it’s about creating a sense of community. Bill, a retired math teacher, believes the restaurant will fill a niche in Charbonneau, joining the neighborhood’s existing offerings like Lux Sucre bakery and The Marketplace Café. The father-son team hopes Lumière becomes a destination that locals will return to again and again, known for great food and a welcoming atmosphere.
“We want customers to feel like they really want to be here,” Bill said. “Our goal is to create an environment that’s as inviting as the food is flavorful.”
