Watertown, South Dakota, has welcomed a new dining experience with Catrachito Latin Food Restaurant, offering Latin fusion cuisine that highlights the vibrant flavors of Central America. The menu, though small, brings influences from various countries in the region, with a special focus on the rich culinary traditions of Honduras. For many in South Dakota, these dishes might be a new discovery, but they’re guaranteed to delight any food lover.
Central American Fusion with a Honduran Touch
The team behind Catrachito is proud to share the authentic flavors of Honduras, a coastal country of 9.5 million people, with the Watertown community. The name “Catracho” is a term of endearment for a Honduran, and the restaurant aims to offer a taste of the country’s beloved dishes, which are known for their bold, fresh, and fusion-style flavors.
“We offer dishes from our home because they’re so full of flavor and original,” says Greyci Sanchez, who runs the restaurant with friends and family. The close-knit team, consisting of fewer than six people, is responsible for every detail—from prepping the ingredients to serving up the dishes with care.
Pollo Chuca and Plantains: A Taste of Tradition
One standout dish at Catrachito is Pollo Chuco, a traditional Honduran chicken meal. The dish features fried green plantains, topped with shredded cabbage and crispy fried chicken smothered in a tomato-based sauce. It’s served with chismol (Honduran Pico de Gallo), a special pink-hued sauce, and pickled veggies like carrots. Often accompanied by eggs, beans, cheese, avocado, and fried plantains, Pollo Chuco is a hearty, flavorful meal that embodies the spirit of Honduran cuisine.
“It’s very traditional, with chicken slices and a one-of-a-kind seasoning,” Sanchez says. “It’s a typical dinner, served with a variety of sides like beans and fried plantains.”
The Versatility of Plantains
Plantains play a major role in Central American cuisine and are a staple at Catrachito. Though they resemble large bananas, plantains have a unique flavor that combines the mild sweetness of bananas with the starchy texture of potatoes. They’re typically fried until crispy and served with a cream sauce native to Honduras.
“Plantains have an exquisite taste, with just a hint of sweetness,” Sanchez explains. “They can go with anything, from cream and chicken to beans and cheese. They’re incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed at any time of day.”
Unique Side Dishes and Fresh Ingredients
While plantains are a standout, Catrachito also offers other authentic dishes like pupusas, a type of stuffed tortilla, and fresh fish prepared with from-scratch sauces. These dishes bring the true taste of Central America to Watertown, and they’re proving to be a hit with local customers.
The menu also features green bananas (guineos), a unique ingredient used in both salads and desserts. These bananas have a distinct flavor that’s hard to describe but definitely worth trying.
“Guineos are quite tasty, with a unique crunch and a flavor that’s difficult to put into words,” says Sanchez.
Takeout and Future Plans
Currently, Catrachito offers takeout meals, with plans to expand into delivery in the near future. The restaurant is also working on making its menu available online for easier access.
