Mama Nadia’s Kitchen is quickly becoming a favorite for food lovers in Victoria, offering a unique and authentic taste of Egyptian comfort food. The Mediterranean restaurant is run by Ahmad and Sondoss Muhamad, a husband and wife team who have been serving the community from their Cook Street location for the past two years.
Located at the Cook Street Village Activity Centre at 380 Cook Street, Mama Nadia’s Kitchen specializes in takeout orders, offering both pickup and delivery options.
Passion for Authentic Flavors
Ahmad Muhamad shares that their passion for food goes beyond just cooking. “We both share a deep passion for bringing authentic flavors to our community,” he told Victoria Buzz. “This has been our home from the start, and it’s been great seeing more people discover us in this space.”
To the Muhamads, food is not just about nourishment—it’s about sharing the story of their culture and connecting people through the flavors of Egypt. Ahmad explains, “Victoria has such a diverse and curious food scene, and we wanted to introduce authentic, home-style dishes that people might not have tried before. It’s a taste of home, history, and tradition, all in one meal.”
The Inspiration Behind the Name
The name “Mama Nadia’s Kitchen” honors a real person—Nadia, an Egyptian housewife with a love for cooking that greatly influenced the Muhamads. Ahmad recalls, “She has always loved preparing meals for her family and friends, making guests from all around the world feel at home with her warm hospitality and amazing food.”
Her secret? Ahmad adds, “Cooking with love and care.”
A Flavorful Menu
The menu at Mama Nadia’s Kitchen features a variety of specialty dishes, hearty bowls, and snacks, with options to accommodate various dietary restrictions, such as nut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan.
Some of their most popular dishes include:
Juicy Lamb Shank: Slow-cooked to perfection with warm, deep spices.
Koshari: A traditional Egyptian comfort dish.
Chicken Shawarma and Falafel Wraps: Featuring tender, flavorful chicken and crispy, light falafel.
Okra Stew: A hearty stew packed with tomato flavors, tender lamb, and seasoned with traditional spices.
In addition to their main dishes, Mama Nadia’s offers a variety of homemade dips and sauces that complement each meal with unique flavors.
Overcoming Challenges
Running a small business in Victoria, Mama Nadia’s has faced some challenges, particularly with rising food costs and supply chain issues. “Keeping prices fair while maintaining quality is always a challenge, but we’re committed to offering authentic, homemade dishes without compromising on ingredients or preparation,” Ahmad shared.
The restaurant also operates out of a ghost kitchen, which can make it harder for customers to reach them directly. Ahmad explains, “The best way to support us is by ordering food, spreading the word, and leaving reviews. Word-of-mouth and social media are huge for a small business like ours. We appreciate every customer who shares their experience, recommends us to friends, or leaves a kind review online. Every bit of support helps us grow.”
Looking to the Future
Currently, Mama Nadia’s Kitchen only offers takeout, but the Muhamads are hopeful for the future. They dream of one day offering dine-in service and expanding their catering options.
For now, their focus remains on delivering authentic Egyptian dishes to as many people as possible and continuing to grow their presence in the Victoria food scene.
