With over 30 stalls, the event is set to run until February 9, 2025, showcasing the state’s rich traditions, crafts, and culinary delights.
Promoting Odisha’s Hidden Talents and Culture
Sasmita Mishra, the head coordinator of the mela, shared that this event marks the third edition held in Hyderabad. “Our goal is to promote Odisha’s tourism and culture while highlighting hidden talents that haven’t received much attention,” she said. The mela features 30 skilled weavers and artisans from Odisha’s rural areas, offering visitors a chance to witness their craftsmanship firsthand.
“We are bringing the essence of Odisha to Hyderabad. This is not just a celebration of food, but also a platform for artisans to showcase their unique skills,” Mishra added.
Authentic Odia Cuisine: A Feast for the Senses
The mela also presents a delightful experience for food lovers, with 30 food stalls serving authentic Odia cuisine. Visitors can sample Odisha’s famous dishes, including the GI-tagged Rasgulla, Chhena Poda, and Dahi Vada.
“Food plays a big part in showcasing Odisha’s culture. From sweet to savory, the variety of dishes will give visitors a true taste of the state’s culinary diversity,” said Sasmita Mishra. In addition to the food, the event highlights traditional crafts, including Sambalpuri textiles, Maniabandha, and Pattachitra from Raghurajpur.
Mishra encourages everyone to visit the mela and support the artisans: “It would be wonderful if everyone could come and show their appreciation for the hard work of our craftspeople.”
Traditional Dance and Performances to Enhance the Experience
The Odisha Food and Craft Mela also celebrates the state’s rich performing arts, with a special focus on the classical Odissi dance form. Saswat Joshi, an internationally recognized Odissi dancer and choreographer, will perform live at the event. Visitors can also enjoy the Madia dance, a rare and ancient dance form that dates back over 200 years.
Additionally, a troop from Mayurbhanj will showcase an authentic folk and tribal dance, further adding to the diverse cultural offerings of the mela.
“This event is not only about food and crafts but also a celebration of Odisha’s dance and music traditions,” said Mishra.
