In a groundbreaking development for culinary diplomacy, the Japanese government has appointed Ms. Nooresha Kably and Brehadeesh Kumar as Goodwill Ambassadors for the Promotion of Japanese Cuisine. This marks a significant step in strengthening the cultural ties between India and Japan, showcasing India’s growing influence in the global culinary scene.
Strengthening Cultural and Gastronomic Ties
The Goodwill Ambassador initiative is designed to preserve, promote, and share Japan’s rich culinary heritage worldwide. As part of their new roles, Kably and Kumar will provide expert guidance to Japanese cuisine professionals outside of Japan, focusing on further enhancing the ties between Japan and India.
A special ceremony to honor Kably and Kumar will take place at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence in New Delhi on February 24, 2025. This recognition, announced by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) in December 2024, is a historic first for Indian nationals based in India.
Previous Recognition and Growth of Japanese Cuisine in India
In December 2022, the MAFF had appointed Harry KOSATO Hakuei as Japan’s first “Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador” for India. Hakuei, known for his work as India Representative for Kikkoman and as the Founder of Sushi and More India, helped promote Japanese products like Kikkoman soy sauce, Ito-en teas, and Ishimaru noodles in the Indian market.
Kably and Kumar have both been key players in introducing Japanese cuisine to India. Their expertise and efforts have helped grow the popularity of Japanese food among Indian diners, making them ideal choices for this prestigious role.

Nooresha Kably has been instrumental in bringing authentic Japanese flavors to India. As the founder of a renowned culinary institute focused on Japanese cuisine, Kably has trained many aspiring chefs in sushi-making, ramen, and traditional cooking methods.
Her deep knowledge and dedication to promoting washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) have earned her widespread recognition. In her new role as Goodwill Ambassador, Kably will continue to advocate for authentic Japanese culinary experiences, both in India and beyond.
Brehadeesh Kumar: Bridging Cultures Through Japanese Gastronomy
Brehadeesh Kumar is a respected figure in India’s culinary world, known for his expertise in Japanese gastronomy and sake. He has played an important role in integrating Japanese culinary techniques into India’s diverse food culture, specializing in fermentation, umami science, and sake.
Kumar’s efforts in training chefs and restaurateurs have contributed significantly to India’s understanding and appreciation of Japanese food. His extensive knowledge of sake pairing will also be vital in expanding India’s understanding of Japan’s sake culture.
Celebration of Appointment
To mark this historic appointment, a special event will be held at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence in New Delhi on February 24, 2025. The ceremony will feature remarks from the Ambassador, followed by the official appointment of Kably and Kumar. Both will share their journeys and their commitment to promoting Japanese cuisine.
The celebration will also include a seminar led by sake expert Ms. Eoka Eiko, highlighting sake’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2024. The event will conclude with a sake toast, a standing reception, and a networking session for industry professionals to connect and celebrate this landmark achievement.
With these appointments, Japan reaffirms its commitment to promoting culinary diplomacy and the global appeal of its traditional cuisine, washoku.
