Flavorful Dishes That Keep Customers Coming Back

Jean and Lee Kitchen is known for offering a wide variety of flavorful dishes, and while there are many options to choose from, a few stand out as customer favorites. One such dish is the cumin lamb, which has become a standout.

The dish features tender lamb sautéed with green and yellow onions, adding depth and texture. The cumin flavor is bold but not overpowering, allowing the other umami flavors to shine through. The tender lamb is cooked to perfection, making this dish savory and satisfying.

Another fan favorite is the three-cup chicken, a classic Taiwanese dish. The chicken is cooked to perfection, with tender meat that falls off the bone. The addition of garlic cloves and spinach enhances the dish with additional flavor and color, while the sauce strikes the perfect balance of sweetness, nuttiness, and slight tartness.

For a lighter and more refreshing finish to the meal, Jean and Lee offers a bubble milk tea that is not too sweet and won’t leave you feeling overly full.

A Sweet Treat for the Lunar New Year

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Jean and Lee offers complimentary fried red-bean rice cakes. These unique treats are not overly sweet and have a texture similar to banana bread. The outside is crispy, while the inside is soft and chewy, reminiscent of Turkish delight. It’s a special, flavorful offering that adds to the charm of dining at Jean and Lee Kitchen.

A Unique Twist on Authentic Dishes

While the dishes at Jean and Lee Kitchen are flavorful, some customers note that they differ slightly from what they might expect from traditional Chinese or Taiwanese cuisine. Boxi Liu, a returning customer with Chinese heritage, shared that while the food is delicious, it isn’t always 100% authentic to his hometown experiences.

“It’s not 100 percent authentic,” Liu said. “It’s not that the taste is bad, it’s just not what we expected or experienced in our hometown.”

Despite this, Liu appreciates the small, street-style dishes the restaurant serves, especially the fried tofu options, which remain a favorite.

Embracing Taiwanese Street Food Culture

Chien Lee, the son of the restaurant owner and the “Jean” in Jean and Lee, explained that the restaurant specializes in authentic Taiwanese street food, a rare find in their area. This focus on street-style dishes has contributed to their success, and Lee is proud of the restaurant’s unique offerings.

“We are doing authentic, traditional Taiwanese street food, so there are not many other restaurants that can compete, and there are no similar ones around these areas,” Lee said. “So once people want to try Taiwanese food, this is the only place they can think about in this whole area.”

Lee recommends the scallion beef wrap and steamed pork buns as must-try dishes. His personal favorite, however, is the pork chop over rice, which he praises for being both tasty and filling.

Family and Hospitality at the Heart of the Restaurant

Jean and Lee Kitchen isn’t just about food—it’s about creating an atmosphere where customers feel like they are dining at a friend’s house. Lee emphasizes the importance of friendly service and making sure guests feel welcome and cared for, no matter the situation.

“We like friendly service,” Lee said. “You can do whatever. You can talk loud. You know, you can switch seats, no problem. You drop the food on the ground, it’s okay. You know, we take care of it. No worries, come back and pay if you remember.”

One of the biggest challenges Lee faces is maintaining the quality and authenticity of the food, particularly when hiring new chefs. However, Lee credits the consistency of the chefs who have been working at Jean and Lee Kitchen for over 10 years for the restaurant’s success.

“It’s very tough to find a chef who can cook our food,” Lee said. “The chefs have been working for 10 years here, we have never changed chefs.”

Despite the challenges, Lee believes that the atmosphere and the sense of home they provide are just as important as the food itself.

“It’s not just the food,” Lee said. “It’s about the feeling of where you’re sitting down and eating, and with who you talk to when you’re eating. So even if the food is not 100 percent correct, the same, like Taiwanese taste, you still have some kind of homesick feeling when you’re eating.”

A Cozy Corner in Newton for Asian Cuisine Lovers

Jean and Lee Kitchen is a hidden gem for those seeking flavorful, comforting Chinese and Taiwanese dishes with a homely touch. With its friendly atmosphere, loyal customer base, and dedication to delivering delicious food, it’s a spot that feels like home, making diners want to return time and time again. Whether you’re craving authentic Taiwanese street food or a relaxing evening out, Jean and Lee Kitchen offers a memorable dining experience.
