Ixtapa Fine Mexican Cuisine has closed its Johnson County location after five successful years. The restaurant, located at 7305 W. 95th St. in Overland Park, has ceased operations due to rising costs, including rent and food prices.
Co-owner Victor Esqueda cited the increasing cost of ingredients, alcohol, and rent as the main reasons behind the closure. “Everything has increased so much — food, alcohol 20 to 30 percent. Some meat is 100 percent more,” Esqueda explained. “And I cannot increase my prices.”
The Challenge of Rising Costs
Ixtapa, known for its authentic Mexican dishes and use of family recipes, faced significant financial challenges as expenses continued to rise. Esqueda, who grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico, emphasized that the restaurant’s focus was on fresh, high-quality ingredients rather than fast food.
While business was strong during weekends, weekday sales were lower, which contributed to the closure. Esqueda also tried to boost visibility by adding a temporary sign along 95th Street, advertising unique menu items such as “Mexican food like you’ve never tried before” and promoting the lunch menu and happy hour. However, these efforts were not enough to offset the financial pressures.
Ixtapa’s Legacy and Northland Location
Esqueda expressed gratitude toward the loyal customers of the Overland Park location. “I have wonderful customers and I thank them for their support,” he said. “They are very kind and loyal, and I hope to see them up north.”
While the Overland Park location has closed, Ixtapa’s original restaurant in North Kansas City, across from Zona Rosa at 7103 N.W. Barry Road, remains open. Esqueda hopes that Johnson County patrons will continue to visit the original location.
The Overland Park restaurant, which includes a patio, is now listed for sale by Lane4 Property Group.
