Origen, a contemporary Mexican cuisine restaurant, is set to open on March 2 at the former location of XOXO Retro Neighborhood Diner. The new restaurant is the result of a collaboration between co-founders Franco Mestre and Sebastian Berho, who previously launched Trattoria Da Sofia in Kensington.
A Modern Take on Mexican Food
Origen aims to showcase the rich diversity of Mexican cuisine, extending far beyond the traditional taco. From Baja seafood to Oaxacan mole, the restaurant promises to highlight the varied flavors of Mexico. Co-founder Franco Mestre, whose family hails from Mexico City, has long dreamed of opening a restaurant that redefines what Mexican food can be.
“For me, Origen is about where everything starts,” Mestre said, reflecting on his vision for the restaurant.
Chef Tomás Fernández has crafted a minimalist menu focused on shared plates that will change daily. Dishes will feature fresh seafood, Mexican-seasoned short ribs, Peruvian-inspired ceviche with leche de tigre (tiger’s milk), and tuna tartare. The food will be served on custom plates made by a ceramicist from Guadalajara.
A Unique Dining Experience
Brandon MacLyman, known for his work at Noble Experiment and Trattoria Da Sofia, will manage the beverage program. The drink offerings will focus on organic ingredients and housemade accoutrements, with around seven signature cocktails and a selection of wines from around the world, including natural wine options.
The 3,000-square-foot space, which seats 90 guests, has been designed to evoke a laid-back Baja beach vibe with calming tans and beiges. The interior design, inspired by Mestre and Berho’s surf trips to Baja, aims to recreate the relaxed atmosphere of local seafood restaurants.
“We wanted to bring that down-to-earth, community vibe from Baja up to San Diego,” Mestre explained.
Opening Details
Origen will open on Sunday, March 2, and will be open for dinner service from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. A soft opening may take place this week to fine-tune operations before the official debut.
The restaurant is located at 3831 Park Blvd, Hillcrest. With a rotating menu and an inviting atmosphere, Origen is poised to become a go-to destination for those looking to explore new flavors in Mexican cuisine.
