Asempe Kitchen’s chef and owner, Kuukua Yomekpe, hails from Ghana and is passionate about sharing the traditions of West African food. The name “Asempe” is derived from the Fante language of the Akan people, meaning “curiosity,” reflecting Kuukua’s desire to introduce the diverse tastes and cultures of West Africa to a wider audience.
Having first opened in Ohio, Asempe Kitchen made its way to Syracuse before recently expanding to Ithaca, continuing to share West African culinary traditions with the region.

During a recent appearance on Bridge Street, Kuukua demonstrated her culinary skills by preparing a traditional West African dish, gari foto.
