When Carola Bejarano and her family immigrated to the United States from Bolivia in 2018, the idea of starting a business felt overwhelming. However, today, Bejarano proudly runs Andino Artisan Gelato alongside her husband Carlos and their sons.
From Bolivia to Austin: The Journey to Success
Opening a new business in a foreign country, with a different language and culture, was no small feat, Carola explained. Despite these challenges, the Bejarano family remained focused on what mattered most: being together and continuing a legacy.
In 2018, Andino Artisan Gelato opened its first location at Barton Creek Square. Four years later, the family business has expanded with additional locations in Sunset Valley and Bouldin Creek, offering a variety of fresh, high-quality gelato made daily.
A Family Legacy in Gelato Making
Carola’s love for gelato runs deep, as her family’s gelato tradition dates back more than 50 years in Bolivia. Her mother’s gelato business grew to over 25 shops, and when her relatives expanded into other businesses, Carola decided to carry on the gelato tradition.
In 2020, Carola and her family took an online course from Carpigiani Gelato University in Italy. This training helped refine their family recipe to cater to Austin’s diverse tastes and helped them create gelato with a modern twist while preserving its cultural roots.
“We want to reflect the cultural mix of Austin,” said Esteban Bejarano, Carola’s son and the acting chief financial officer. “That’s why we incorporate flavors from Argentina, America, and traditional Italian gelatos.”
Fresh, Authentic Flavors for Every Taste
Andino Artisan Gelato offers a wide selection of 32 flavors, including gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free options. The gelato is made fresh using real fruits and natural ingredients, ensuring authenticity in every bite.
“We focus on natural products,” Carola said. “If we say it’s strawberry orange, you can be sure it has real strawberry and orange in it. We don’t use artificial flavors or colors.”
The menu features indulgent options like Belgian chocolate, Mexican vanilla, and Argentinian dulce de leche, alongside refreshing fruity options like coconut, hibiscus, and lemoncello.
Growing with the Community
As Andino continues to thrive, the Bejarano family is eager to deepen their involvement in the local community. Carola sees the growth of the business as a blessing and hopes that their passion for gelato shines through in every scoop they serve.
Andino Artisan Gelato has locations at 5400 Brodie Lane, Ste. 235, Austin; 2901 S. Capital of Texas Highway, Austin; and 2214 S. First St., Austin.
