Inside Look at Alexa’s Dulceria & Market: A New Dessert Haven on Nicholson Drive

by Ella

Alexa’s Dulceria & Market is the sweet spot you didn’t know you were missing in Baton Rouge. Nestled on Nicholson Drive, this charming dessert café offers a delightful mix of Venezuelan, Colombian, and Honduran-inspired treats that have quickly captured the attention of local dessert lovers. With a focus on fresh, handmade sweets and a welcoming atmosphere, Alexa’s has become a go-to destination for anyone craving a sweet escape.

A Sweet Beginning: From Family Grocery Store to Standalone Dessert Café

Alexa’s Dulceria & Market opened its doors in February 2023, marking a new chapter for owner Alexa Martinez. After outgrowing the space in her family’s grocery store, El Bodegón Latin Market, Martinez decided to create a dedicated space for her bakery and desserts. Located at 5201 Nicholson Drive, Suite F, the café occupies a spot once home to businesses like Toasted and Bright Side Bar & Daiquiris.

“We signed our lease in November and worked hard to get everything ready,” Martinez shared. The result is a bright and inviting space with pops of greenery, a cheery greeting from Martinez and her family, and a wide array of mouthwatering desserts on display.

A Place to Relax and Enjoy

Inspired by the dulcerías in Venezuela, where people go to enjoy coffee, desserts, and spend time relaxing, Alexa’s Dulceria & Market isn’t just a place to grab a treat—it’s a spot to linger and enjoy. The café offers both tables and booths where customers can sit back and savor their selections at a leisurely pace.

Menu offerings rotate on a screen above the counter, and a chilled case showcases freshly made sweets. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic Venezuelan tres leches cake or a Nutella cheesecake slice, there’s something for everyone at Alexa’s. For customers looking for something savory, there are Colombian- and Venezuelan-style breads stuffed with cheese, beef, chicken, or ham.

The Star Desserts

Some of the most popular desserts at Alexa’s Dulceria & Market include:

Nutella and Biscoff Cheesecake Slices: A rich, creamy indulgence that has quickly become a customer favorite.

Venezuelan Tres Leches Cake: A slightly sweeter, richer take on the beloved dessert, offering a taste of authentic Venezuelan flavors.

Rice Pudding, Flans, and Napoleons: Other delicious desserts that round out the menu and give customers a variety of options to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Custom Cakes and Catering Orders: Alexa’s also takes custom cake orders and provides catering, making it the perfect spot for birthdays, celebrations, and special events.

Martinez and her husband also offer weekly specials based on trending ingredients and social media popularity. Recent specials included a lime carlota, a Mexican-style icebox cake, and Dubai chocolate-style dipped strawberries.

A Family Affair

Alexa’s Dulceria & Market is truly a family-run business. Martinez works alongside her mother, husband, and mother-in-law to bring the desserts to life. Her husband handles the baking, while Martinez pipes Nutella, cookie butter, and decorates the sweets and slices. Her mother helps with coffee drinks and manning the counter, creating a warm, family-friendly atmosphere for customers.

Despite the busy nature of the shop, Martinez remains hands-on, managing social media posts, planning daily tasks, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly. The family’s hard work has paid off, as Alexa’s Dulceria & Market has quickly become a popular destination for both dessert lovers and those looking to explore unique imported goods.

The Market and Imported Goods

In addition to offering a range of desserts, Alexa’s also features a small market stocked with imported goods from Venezuela, Honduras, and Colombia. The shelves are lined with snacks and candies, while cold cases hold frozen food items and beverages. Customers can browse the market while enjoying their desserts, picking up something special to take home.

Martinez explained, “Whenever someone comes in for a dessert, they often end up checking out the market too. We carry things that aren’t easy to find elsewhere, like imported candies and snacks that pair well with our desserts.”

A Vision for Growth

As Alexa’s Dulceria & Market continues to grow, Martinez envisions expanding her brand to more locations, each with its unique vibe and decor. In addition to growing her business, Martinez is focused on connecting with her community and giving back to the area that has supported her from the beginning.

“I feel like we have a lot of space here to grow, and we’re reaching a diverse group of people,” Martinez shared. “It’s been amazing to see the reception we’ve received, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
