McCormick & Schmick’s, the seafood and steakhouse chain founded in Portland, is preparing to close its final Oregon location. The restaurant at Bridgeport Village in Tigard will shut its doors on March 22, marking the end of the brand’s presence in its home state.
Lease Expiration and Transition for Staff
The closure is due to the expiration of the building’s lease, the company confirmed in a statement. They expressed gratitude for the support of Tigard’s community and for the dedication of its employees over the years. The company also assured that efforts are being made to relocate employees to other nearby properties, and guests can continue to visit Jake’s Grill, Jake’s Crawfish, and other McCormick & Schmick’s locations nationwide.
From Portland to National Reach
Founded in 1979 by Bill McCormick and Doug Schmick, the first McCormick & Schmick’s location was in downtown Portland, though it closed in 2009. The chain’s RiverPlace location followed suit and shut down in March 2024, leaving the Tigard location as the last one standing in Oregon.
Acquisition by Landry’s and Continued Decline
In 2011, Landry’s, a Houston-based restaurant group, acquired McCormick & Schmick’s. At the time of the purchase, the chain operated over 80 locations across 26 U.S. states and in Canada. However, in 2017, Landry’s began closing several of McCormick & Schmick’s restaurants. Currently, the chain operates only 15 locations, with an additional catering business in Seattle.
Sister Properties Still Serving Portland
While McCormick & Schmick’s will be gone from Oregon, several sister properties remain in the Portland metro area. Jake’s Grill, Jake’s Famous Crawfish, and Portland City Grill continue to serve the local community, keeping the legacy of McCormick & Schmick’s alive in other forms.
