Dietary Changes Could Lower the Risk of Tinnitus, Study Suggests

A new study published in The BMJ suggests that making certain dietary changes could reduce the risk of developing tinnitus, a condition characterized by ringing in the ears. The research team, led by senior researcher Qinxiu Zhang from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Sichuan, China, concluded that diet-based strategies might play a significant role in managing chronic tinnitus.

The Connection Between Diet and Tinnitus

According to the research, consuming foods like fruits, dairy, caffeine, and dietary fiber may lower the chances of developing tinnitus. The study reviewed data from eight previous studies, which involved more than 300,000 participants, to explore potential links between diet and the condition.

The study found that people who consumed these foods regularly had a reduced risk of tinnitus. Specifically, the risk of developing the condition decreased by:

35% for those who ate more fruit

17% for those who consumed more dairy

10% for those who drank caffeine

9% for those who had higher fiber intake

How Foods May Protect Hearing Health

Researchers believe that the nutrients in these foods may help protect hearing health. For example, caffeine might encourage the release of hormones that protect hearing-related nerves. Similarly, fruit and fiber may help manage blood sugar levels and reduce harmful inflammation, which could contribute to hearing loss.

“The protective effects of these diets on blood vessels and nerves, along with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, may help reduce tinnitus risk,” the study authors explained.

Caution in Interpreting the Findings

While the findings suggest potential benefits of these dietary changes, researchers caution that the quality of the evidence is not very strong. “It is crucial to interpret our findings cautiously due to the overall low quality of the evidence available,” they added.

Additionally, the study did not find any evidence that other foods, such as chocolate, vegetables, eggs, meat, or fish, could lower the risk of tinnitus. The researchers also noted that consuming excessive amounts of fruit or caffeine did not appear to provide additional protection from tinnitus.
