Mother-Daughter Duo Brings Authentic German Cuisine to Virginia

by Ella

A new restaurant in Southwest Virginia, Oma’s Haus, is bringing a taste of Germany to the region. Located at 111 Dickerson Avenue in Coeburn, the eatery is the brainchild of a mother-daughter team, Ulrike and Sonja Whalen, who aim to serve traditional German cuisine made from family recipes.

The name “Oma,” which translates to “grandmother” in German, reflects the heart of their operation—authentic, homemade dishes that have not been Americanized. Ulrike, originally from Germany, met her husband while he was serving overseas in the Army. Together with their daughter, Sonja, they opened the restaurant with a menu full of classic German favorites like Jaeger Schnitzel, sauerkraut, bratwursts, and goulash.

Traditional Dishes and Homemade Baked Goods

“We’re very traditional German food, and our dishes haven’t been Americanized,” said Ulrike Whalen. “We believe in maintaining the authentic flavors.”

Sonja Whalen, a graduate of culinary school, handles the cooking and also bakes all the breads and pastries from scratch. The bakery side of Oma’s Haus offers German pretzels with beer cheese, including a Gouda cheese and bacon pretzel. Other popular baked goods include traditional German breads and desserts like Black Forest cake.

“We’ve created something unique and fun,” said Sonja. “We even have a beer garden tent in the back and an Oompah band for Oktoberfest. Our waitstaff is wonderful, always catering to our guests with warmth and humor. Every dish we prepare is made from scratch with care and love.”
