A new study has provided compelling evidence that adopting a healthy plant-based diet can significantly reduce the risk of death from cardiometabolic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The study analyzed data from nearly 78,000 individuals in the UK, US, and China, all of whom had cardiometabolic conditions. The researchers used dietary questionnaires and interviews to assess participants’ diets, categorizing them into healthful and unhealthful plant-based diet indexes.

Healthful Plant-Based Diet: Individuals who consumed plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, while limiting refined products and animal-based foods, scored higher on the healthful index.

Unhealthful Plant-Based Diet: Participants who ate more refined grains, potatoes, sugary drinks, and animal-based foods scored higher on the unhealthful index.

Key Findings: Lower Mortality Risk with a Healthful Plant-Based Diet

The study revealed that individuals with higher scores on the healthful plant-based diet index had a 17 to 24 percent lower risk of death from any cause, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Conversely, those who scored higher on the unhealthful plant-based diet index had a 28 to 36 percent increased risk of death.

Lead author Zhangling Chen from Central South University in Changsha, China, emphasized the importance of consuming more healthy plant-based foods, less unhealthy plant-based foods, and reducing animal-based food intake. These dietary shifts were found to have a substantial impact on reducing the risk of death from cardiometabolic disorders.

Even after adjusting for variables such as age, race, smoking, and physical activity, the connection between a healthful plant-based diet and lower mortality risk remained strong. This suggests that diet plays a crucial role in managing and preventing cardiometabolic diseases, regardless of other lifestyle factors.

Study Limitations

One limitation of the study is that the dietary data was self-reported at the baseline and was not reassessed throughout the study. As a result, changes in participants’ diets over time were not captured, which may have affected the results. However, the overall findings align with numerous other studies that support the health benefits of a whole foods plant-based diet for improving long-term health outcomes.

Additional Research Supporting Plant-Based Diets

Several other studies have also found that plant-based diets, particularly those that emphasize whole foods, can improve cardiometabolic health. For example, one study found that soy milk, when compared to cow’s milk, was better for reducing blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and inflammation. Another study highlighted that individuals who consumed more plant-based proteins than animal-based proteins experienced a reduced risk of heart disease.

These findings are consistent with growing evidence that plant-based diets are an effective strategy for managing and preventing chronic conditions, especially those related to the cardiovascular system.
