Donnelly Café, a well-loved local establishment in Lucan, is under new ownership with Syed Rahman at the helm. While the name of the café remains unchanged, Rahman is infusing a fresh approach by offering authentic Italian dishes to the community.
A World of Experience Behind the Counter
Rahman, who took over the café in January, has a wealth of culinary experience gained from his time working in kitchens across the globe. From London, England to Ireland, Rahman’s culinary journey eventually brought him to London, Ontario, where he honed his skills at Fanshawe College. He has worked in well-known local spots, including Fresno’s – The Italian Table and the London Hunt and Country Golf Club.
However, Rahman says that owning his own restaurant is a new and exciting chapter in his career. “I prefer Italian food because for the last 17 years, I’ve worked in Italian restaurants,” Rahman shared. He believes his extensive experience in Italian cooking will allow him to bring something special to Lucan, where Italian cuisine has been missing from the local dining scene.
A Love for Lucan’s Small-Town Charm
New to Lucan, Rahman has quickly developed a deep affection for the town, comparing it to his own experiences living in small communities in Ireland. “I love this community,” Rahman said, expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome he has received.
Bringing More Than Italian to the Menu
With 17 years of experience in the kitchen, Rahman aims to not only provide traditional Italian dishes but also introduce a variety of special features and holiday-themed meals. “I can cook any type of food,” Rahman explained, adding that his expertise spans multiple cuisines, including Chinese, Thai, Irish, British, and Mexican.
Positive Feedback and New Services for Customers
Since reopening the café, Rahman has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both customers and local residents. “The people are incredible,” he said, highlighting the appreciation for the food quality, taste, and reasonable prices. Rahman is confident that anyone who visits will return time and again.
To make dining more convenient, Rahman has introduced delivery services on Fridays and Saturdays, with plans to extend this option if it proves successful. He is also working on rolling out online ordering in the coming days to further enhance customer convenience.
Keeping the Name, Staying True to Tradition
Despite the changes Rahman has brought to the café, he is clear on one thing: the name Donnelly Café will remain. “Our intention is to never change the name,” Rahman emphasized. For him, the name is an integral part of Lucan’s local culture, and he is committed to maintaining the tradition while adding his own touch to the café’s legacy.
With a passion for Italian cuisine and a deep connection to the Lucan community, Syed Rahman is set to make Donnelly Café a must-visit destination for food lovers.
