New Haven Restaurant Week returns on Sunday with food and drink deals across the city

by Ella

New Haven Restaurant Week kicks off on Sunday, April 6, and runs through next Friday, April 11. About two dozen restaurants in the city are participating. Most will offer $25 set lunches and $45 or $55 set dinners. Taxes and gratuities are extra.

Connecticut has many culinary specialties, like steamed cheeseburgers in Meriden or lobster rolls on the coast, but New Haven has long been known as Pizza City. That’s changing. National and regional publications have been reporting on New Haven’s growing and diverse restaurant scene, which is concentrated in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

“One of the great things about New Haven is that it’s very walkable,” Tim Cabral, co-owner of Gioia and Ordinary, told Hurst in September. “You can park your car once and go to different bars, different restaurants and have a great night. There are a lot of great things going on and a lot of new things coming up. It’s a great little city.”

New Haven Restaurant Week started in 2008 as the first restaurant week in Connecticut. Currently, more than 40 towns in Connecticut have their own restaurant weeks.

Restaurants like Habesha, one of New Haven’s newest eateries and only the city’s second Ethiopian restaurant, join longtime staples like L’Orcio on State Street and Geronimo Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill on Crown Street in the effort.

Parking deals are also available around town. The Shops at Yale will offer two hours of free parking if drivers show a paper receipt of $50 or more from a participating restaurant that day. Park New Haven’s Crown and Temple Street garages offer $6 parking during lunch hours (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
