Donabe On South Bank Is London’s First Japanese Claypot Rice Restaurant

by Ella

They’ve been serving up top-notch sushi on the South Bank for the past seven years. But now the owners of Hannah’s in County Hall are making some changes, according to the Code Hospitality newsletter. First, they’re moving the sushi bar to another hotel in east London. From the summer, you’ll find its new guise – Kokin – at the Stratford Hotel (opening May 1).

In its place is Donabe on the river, which is said to be the first Japanese restaurant in London to specialise in casserole rice. Sure, there are a few Chinese casserole rice restaurants in London, notably Pot & Rice in Chinatown. But this one aims to be the first to specialise in Japanese cuisine.

We haven’t seen a menu yet, but dishes on the launch menu are said to include:

Sea bream clay pot

Mullet clay pot rice

Smoked tuna and salmon roe rice bowl

“We want to give our guests an authentic Donabe experience that’s hard to come by in London,” says the owner. Looks like this is a new place to check out.
