We must admit, when we received the information about The Orangery on April 8, we did initially think it was an elaborate April Fools’ joke. But it turns out there is indeed a new restaurant just off Tottenham Court Road, with London’s largest on-site hydroponic farm.
With over 35,000 plants growing within the Orangery, the yield is said to be equivalent to over an acre of traditional farmland. As for the restaurant, it’s open all day from breakfast to dinner and, as you’d imagine, serves mostly British cuisine.
Breakfast sounds pretty authentic, with a variety of options including a pork and farm sage breakfast muffin, GEC brown sauce and Keen’s cheddar or a plate of Chapel & Swan smoked salmon and St. Ewe scrambled eggs with Rockstar sourdough bread.
The lunch and dinner menu expands to include dishes such as:
Chunky Minestrone Soup, Select Farm Herbs and Farm Pesto, served with Bermondsey Hard Pressed Cheese
Leek and Shallot Tart, Farm Black Cavolo and Crispy Herb Oil
Hereford Beef Flank Steak, Pickled Shallot Farm Herb Salad and Green Sauce
Drinks have a similarly farm-fresh feel, from the Agave Mule made with farm sage to the Farm Basil Mock Gimlet.
If you’re looking for a truly unique place to enjoy a special meal, there’s also a Chef’s Table in the main farm downstairs of the restaurant.
