A German bakery and cafe has opened somewhat unexpectedly in London, and without much fanfare. Zeit für Brot (which means “Bread Time”) has a number of bakeries across Germany. Here they have chosen to open their first UK branch in Islington, on a large corner lot at the junction of Islington High Street and Pentonville Street in Angell.
After a short visit you’ll find that this is an extremely impressive looking cafe/bakery. It has high ceilings and light-filled rooms, all beautifully decorated in a minimalist style with light wood. As for the food on offer, there are breads, sandwiches, pastries and buns. At the time of writing, this includes a fried chicken steak sandwich, raisin kringle, cardamom knopf, banana bread and a variety of schneckes (square cinnamon roll-like buns).
Beyond that, there is a wide variety of breads to choose from, from simple baguettes to “little hausbrots”. Finally, there’s porridge to eat in or take away
Everything is baked on site (there’s a large glass-enclosed bakery at the back) and from our visit it’s already proving quite popular. We wouldn’t be surprised if more of these pop up around London soon.
