Its name might literally translate to “good fork,” but its implicit meaning refers to someone who truly loves good food and enjoys time at the table. That probably applies to everyone who dines at Buona Forchetta. The award-winning Italian restaurant with multiple locations in San Diego (and more recently in Newport Beach) opened this location last April and quickly won us over with its fresh pasta, carefully curated wines by the glass, and friendly service. But what really ignited our passion for this new spot was its famous Neapolitan pizza, which comes from a wood-fired oven (imported from Italy, of course). Gluten-free options and a range of plant-based favorites, including a surprisingly delicious vegan caprese, are also drawcards. Appetizers include the usual suspects: fried calamari, bruschetta (like bruschetta’s big brother), beef meatballs, plus a unique specialty, the Montanara pizza, a deep-fried pizza with a tangy flavor.
Our favorite: There are more than 30 pizzas to choose from on the menu (including no-sauce, vegan, and fried varieties), but nothing beats the classic Margherita, with its San Marzano tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella, bubbly, chewy crust, basil, and premium olive oil.
